It has been years since we installed our playground style front porch swing. It’s funny how the simplest of endeavors can sometimes make the most impact. In the summer, the swing gets used to escape the mid day heat. In the evenings, we sit and swing while chatting with family and neighbors or taking phone calls.  Kids from the block swing while waiting for our kids to come out and play. All this and it adds a fun, whimsical feel to the front of the house.

We started with a piece of hardwood. I had a piece of reclaimed white oak left over from another project, but any piece of solid wood that can withstand the elements will work. Drill two holes at each end of the piece large enough to pass some 1/2″ to 5/8″ rope through. We have been known to keep our swing up year -round so I used polypropylene rope. It stands up to weather really well. It also is unaffected by chemicals which is an advantage since I oil the wood a couple times a year.

Tie a good, tight knot on each end of the swing. Use a u-bolt to cinch the ropes together below your knot.

Use the same knot and u-bolts at the top end of each rope. I used a carabiner at the top of each side to make removing the swing more convenient.  Lastly, find a solid joist to secure a pair of threaded eyelets in to.  I made a few small holes to make sure I was hitting something solid. Failure to do so WILL end in pain and suffering. I also made sure my carabiners and eyelets were rated at around 400lbs; the stronger, the better.  All that’s left to do now  is to clip in your swing and have a seat…or a stand!

If you build it, they most certainly will swing!
